Venice’s independently owned Libreria Acqua Alta is probably one of the cutest bookstores I’ve ever been in. In addition to having a gondola full of books in the middle of the sales floor (complete with striped post and costumed mannequins), it also has several resident cats and a lovely view of the canals out back (accessible by climbing up a staircase made of old books and looking over a wall). The owner was friendly and the atmosphere was truly unique, even though I walked out without any books due to the rather overwhelming and slightly disorganized selection.
