I don’t know about you, but a little bit of poetry goes a long way. I’ve been reading Andrea Gibson‘s most recent collection, Pansy, and I experienced one of those rare and powerful moments where the poem spoke directly to my own experiences. Seriously, you should go out and grab yourself a copy of this book, as (like all of Gibson’s collections) it’ll truly move you. But to tide you over, here’s a little nibble…that smallest of pieces that seemed to come directly out of my own heart. It’s from a poem called “Royal Heart” — I hope it speaks to you like it spoke to me.
I can’t live here, in my body.
I can’t live in my body all the time.
It feels too much.
So if I ever feel far away
know I am not gone.
I am just underneath my grief
adjusting the dial on my radio faith
so I can take this life with all of its love
and all of its loss.
